Tweens and Twilight

I was suprised this past weekend when my daughter attended a 'Twilight' themed birthday party for a 9 year old girl.  It was cleverly done, with Team Edward and Team Jacob scavenger hunts, pinata, and more - the parents of the girl seemed to keep it fun and age-appropriate.  Now, I have to admit I have never read the books or seen either of the movies, Twilight or New Moon, but I was under the impression that the content of both the books and movies was more appropriate for older teens and adults.  My 9 year old is bummed out because I haven't let her read the books, but after this party situation, now I'm curious as to what others think....at what age should kids be allowed to watch or read this particular series, or this genre in general?

I haven't read any of the series either. In this case, maybe you could read one of the books to see what your little tween might be reading.

i agree, with the PP, i would read it first myself. i read the first one and didn't like it too much--extremely well written, i just didn't like the slant it took that a high school girl was SO infatuated with this boy. i'm shocked a 9 yr old had a twilight party. i think its for older teens/adults. frankly i'd be surpised if your 9 yr old would even like it. ...but what do i know?!

I'd steer clear of the movies, I hate to admit, but I did see Twilight, the movie! It was pretty graphic at the end when there is actual vampire action. The books are more of a romantic series than really gory, vampire based. I think that's why people like it, they can claim they're into vampires even though the books are really about these two high schoolers completely in love with eachother. Like Maggie said, it's a little disturbing that they are so young and in love, but then again, it is just a fantasy and I'm not sure a 9 year old really comprehends all those adult concepts if the 9 year old is grounded and confidant in who she/he is.
